IgA Nephropathy is a kidney disorder that occurs when immunoglobulin A (IgA)-a protein that helps the body fight infections-settles in the kidneys. It is a form of glomerulonephritis (inflammation of the glomeruli of the kidney). Deposits of the protein IgA build up inside the filters (glomeruli) within the kidneys. When this happens, the glomeruli can't filter waste and excess water from the blood.
First symptom of IgA Nephropathy ""paroxysmal gross hematuria.
1. This symptom often happens to children. The gross hematuria often happens after infection of the upper respiratory tract. It can also happen after acute gastroenteritis or urinary tract infection. The interval are mostly between 24~72 hours.
2. Gross hematuria can continue for several hours or several days and then turn into continuous microscopic hematuria. The hematuria can disappear in some cases but will often recur. When it recurs, hematuria will appear again and will be accompanied by slight general symptoms such as sore muscle, odynuria, waist pain or transient rise of blood pressure and Blood Urea Nitrogen(BUN).
3. Gross hematuria will continue for several hours or several days often less than three days and it has the feature of repeated outbreak.
Second symptom of IgA Nephropathy is microscopic hematuria and no symptom proteinuria.
This symptom is the main clinical manifestation of teenager IgA Nephropathy. It is often found in body test and can be manifested as simple microscopic hematuria or microscopic hematuria accompanied with little proteinuria.
Third symptom of IgA Nephropathy is proteinuria.
Moderate proteinuria is the manifestation of child IgA Nephropathy. 24 hours urine protein is generally less than 1g/24h. A few patients can have large amount of proteinuria and even have Nephrotic Syndrome.
Other symptoms of IgA Nephropathy.
Part of IgA Nephropathy patients can have acute Nephritic Syndrome, Renal Failure and a few can have strong pain with waist or abdomen accompanied by hematuria. Renal function will deteriorate in a short time and there can also be edema and slight and moderate hypertension.
As loss of kidney function progresses, other symptoms may occur, including pain in your sides, fatigue, swelling of hands and feet and high blood pressure.
It will be helpful for patients to know the definition and symptoms of IgA Nephropathy. IgA Nephropathy is a potentially serious condition that requires care from your doctor. The sooner IgA Nephropathy is treated, the more favorable the outcome is.
